One of the Atlanta metro’s best kept secrets for many years, the suburban community of Alpharetta has blossomed since the 1980s to become one of the fastest growing cities in Georgia. Likewise, neighboring Johns Creek has developed a reputation as one of Atlanta’s most desirable upscale communities. With abundant shopping and dining options nearby, plenty of green space and things to do, and some of the top schools in the country, it’s little wonder that these suburbs have become two of the most coveted destinations outside the Perimeter.
HISTORY
The area now occupied by Alpharetta began in the 1830s as a trading post for travelers and the surrounding farmers who settled here. Originally known as Milton, the city was renamed Alpharetta in 1858. The town remained quiet, small and rural for many decades until around 1980, when the first of several tech companies decided to headquarter here, launching a season of great prosperity for this previously sleepy community. Alpharetta’s southeast neighbor, Johns Creek, remained largely rural until the 1980s when developers chose the site for a new technology park, eventually leading to incorporation as a city in 2006. Today, Alpharetta and Johns Creek remain a regional hub of commerce, home to dozens of national companies, offering their residents the best of suburban living within a 35-minute drive of downtown Atlanta.
SCHOOLS
Alpharetta and Johns Creek lie within the highly ranked Fulton County School District, making it a preferred destination for families. Several high quality private schools area also nearby, including Mill Springs Academy, Fulton Science Academy and King’s Ridge Christian School.
SHOPPING/DINING/ATTRACTIONS

Alpharetta offers plenty of places to dine and shop, concentrated mostly in the historic downtown area, Avalon, and North Point Mall on the south side of town. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the abundance of local parks and green space, including the 8-mile-long Big Creek Greenway Trail. Also in town is the 12,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, with a full calendar of concerts, shows and events during the warm months of the year. Nearby Johns Creek is largely known for its many golf courses, its riverside recreation and the renowned Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra.
