Situated just 20 minutes northeast of downtown Atlanta, the community of Brookhaven offers gorgeous homes, an abundance of green space and plenty of nearby shops and restaurants. Combining convenience with a small-town vibe, it’s little wonder that this town of 50,000 is a coveted destination for upscale Atlanta suburban living.
HISTORY
Brookhaven is officially one of the newest cities in Georgia, incorporated in 2012. However, it isn’t the first time this area has been a city. Originally settled in the 1800s as a series of farms, in the early 20th century the land now known as Brookhaven became the go-to place for Atlanta socialites to build their summer homes, largely centered around the newly developed Capital City Country Club. First incorporated as North Atlanta in 1924, the residents opted to unincorporate in the 1960s as an alternative to establishing a new city charter. The area saw a boom in commercial and residential development in the years following, though it remained unincorporated until 2012 when Brookhaven officially became a city again. Today, as in its early days, Brookhaven remains a haven for upscale living, hosting some of the finest homes and properties available in metro Atlanta.
SCHOOLS
Brookhaven is zoned within the DeKalb County School District, which ranks well above the state average, making this area highly attractive to families. Several good private schools are also found nearby, including Atlanta International School, Marist and Mount Vernon Presbyterian School. Brookhaven is also home to the historic Oglethorpe University, a private, liberal arts university hosting over 1,100 students.
SHOPPING/DINING/ATTRACTIONS
Brookhaven is still in many ways a country club community, with the historic Capital City Country Club to the west, and the newer Peachtree Golf Club to the northeast. Many additional parks dot the landscape, offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. Plenty of local shopping and dining options can be found at Town Brookhaven, located on Peachtree Road just south of Oglethorpe University.
HOMES IN BROOKHAVEN
Large luxury homes are abundant in this upscale community, with sale prices among the highest in the metro area and increasing in value year-to-year, particularly around the Capital City Club. However, there are many other price options for townhomes and single family homes. For more information on available properties in Brookhaven, contact us today.
