Combining low taxes and low crime rates with great schools and convenient amenities, it’s little wonder that the village of Vinings and city of Smyrna have become among the most desirable suburbs in the Atlanta area. Located just north of the Chattahoochee River about a 20 minutes northwest of downtown Atlanta, this upscale community of 10,000 oozes small-town charm while offering easy access to some of Atlanta’s best attractions, shopping and dining destinations.
HISTORY
The area now known as Vinings initially grew up around Pace’s Ferry, which transported passengers across the Chattahoochee in the early 1830s. The settlement eventually took its name from William H. Vining, who was instrumental in building the Vinings Bridge when the Western and Atlantic Railroad came through in 1840. Near the end of the Civil War, General Sherman’s troops occupied the Hardy Pace home in Vinings as a hospital for Union soldiers. Despite its long history, this community has never been annexed or incorporated, maintaining its small-town look and feel over the years. Vinings is known today as a suburban retreat of sorts, offering a quiet alternative to in-town living while remaining inside the I-285 Perimeter.
SCHOOLS
Public schools in the Vinings / Smyrna area are administered by the highly rated Cobb County School District, which consistently tests above the state average.
